Nina Trasoff, Tucson City Council Member, Ward 6
Not to worry! Nina won't be talking politics but talking green! She will fill us in on what the City is up to in terms of gray water, rainwater harvesting and solar stub outs! She may even be able to tell us about Tucson's ban of plastic bags - if that's true, who it will impact and why it's important. Nina also will tell us about the Green Festival she puts on each year so we can save the date and maybe even get involved.

Scott Polston, owner, Garment Graphics &
Cherie Murphy, Mrs. Green Eco-Store Director
Scott Polston will be talking to us about why organic cotton? There are actually substantive health reasons why having organic cotton next to your skin is a good choice. Scott will also talk about the shift in the consciousness of some of his customers making greener choices and his "green" catalog. Cherie will bring us up to date on the Mrs. Green Store and tell us about a few more of the products and why they were selected by the Mrs. Green team. We might even spice it up by getting Truly Organic co-founder Paul Weinstein to call in from Seattle to continue the cotton vs. bamboo debate! Get your questions ready!

Jason Isenberg, Urban Organics Landscaping
Jason will provide us with a menu of soup to nuts for sustainable landscape design. He is part of a firm that has maintained a position as one of the leading landscape specialty design organizations in the Old Pueblo. I think Jason dreams in green and then awakens to make those dreams become your outdoor vision of safety, sustainability and beauty! Get your questions ready for this brain trust on organic agriculture, ecological production management, biodiversity, biological cycles. Get the picture?

If you want to learn about where to recycle "anything you can think of from your home" you will want to tune in to hear Terry Dee talk about the many aspects of the successful operation he manages. The Habistore in Tucson, Arizona, is a beehive of activity, sells everything you can think of including the kitchen sink and Terry is at the hub. You will also find out about the important work of Habitat for Humanity and how the Habistore helps support its mission and purpose. Terry is fun, funny and will keep the hour filled with great information from beginning to end.

Cherie Murphy, creative force behind Mrs. Green's SHOP GREEN online store, and owners from THREE of Mrs. Green's Holiday Collection.
Cherie will be sharing with the world just what it takes to launch an online eco-store from scratch. Representatives from Jewel-Ya (our online jewelry selection), WeBe Bags (really cool bags Mrs. Green discovered in Telluride this summer) and from Biggs and Featherbelle, an all natural soap company that started in the co-founder's kitchen. We may even have a mystery guest who has actually shopped at the store by show time and will be able to share the brave, green truth about her/his experience! If you are interested in great stories or want to hear about products that follow the three Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle, listen in and get ready to dial in! This show will fly because there are so many shopping opportunities and so little time!

Lori White, co-founder of the Inner Connection and Pam Bateman, from Vail School District Civano Community School, winner of the Ellen DeGeneris contest for the Greenest School in America.
Lori and Pam will be talking about Green Schools: A Celebration of Global Solutions where education, sustainability and economics meet. The vision for this project is to create and implement a comprehensive, multi-dimensional curriculum that weaves energy/environment/conservation into ALL parts of the school and not just limit these components to science class. They will also talk about why it's important to the success of this project to view the school as the "community" thus including parents, teachers, students AND affiliated individuals with the school. And if that's not enough for you, Lori and Pam will share information with us about the Energy Conservation and Recycling program and Solar installation components of this VERY ambitious, big picture project. Get your questions ready and get your kids to listen so they can call in!

Lynn Julian, partner and co-founder of Kids Konserve.
This company is literally taking the country by storm. And I am barely kidding. Started only this past August, Kids Konserve is already an over-the-top success. Developed by Lynn and her partner, Chance Claxton, the Kids Konserve waste-free lunch kit and other reusable products were the natural outgrowth of what these two women saw as a big need that required immediate attention. With the premise that any business they undertook had to help the environment in some way, it didn't take much imagination to see how they, as parents of young children, were contributing to garbage landfills, pollutants and sending the wrong message to their own children. How could they set an example of conservation for their children and empower them to be the examples of change for the future? You will want to hear the answers and to hear their Great American Dream success story on Mrs. Green Goes Mainstream before you see them on Oprah!

Megan Thompson - Non-GMO Project

What's that you say? GMO = Genetically Modified Organism. I know that my mantra is "living green can be fun." In this case, you will have more fun if you tune in and listen to Megan about just how pervasive genetically modified food is in our country (and in the world) and what the Non-GMO project is doing about it. This entire subject fascinates me and I am certain it will fascinate and inspire you to shop and eat more consciously. FYI, The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization, created by leaders representing all sectors of the organic and natural products industry in the U.S. and Canada, to offer consumers a consistent non-GMO choice for organic and natural products that are produced without genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technologies. This show might blow your mind wide open to infinite possibilities for change.

Renee Staggs, owner of PermaClean and Moore Flooring
Renee will tell us everything we ever wanted to know about dust mites but really didn't want to know once she tells us! This woman really knows about all the little buddies we have living with us in our pillows and in our mattresses and on our furniture. And she also knows just about everything there is to know about environmentally friendly carpeting and flooring and what carpeting gets a bad rap when it shouldn't. Renee's path was somewhat shaped by the tragedy of losing her mother at a very young age after she was exposed to a pesticide spill in a farming community. Renee and her husband Allyn have become another Wikipedia team for Mrs. Green! Get your pad and paper ready to take notes when you listen!

10/25 - ANOTHER LIVE REMOTE  top

I know that I will have lots of questions about what our local restaurants are doing with their waste and about any new and exciting green practices we might not know about - yet!

Trivia Question - What makes up 40% of the material in a municipal landfill? Answer: Paper and paper products

Green Tip - Take a shower instead of a bath. A shower takes up to 4 times less energy than a bath. To maximize the energy savings avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are cheap and provide the same comfort.

Trivia Question - According to the Wall Street Journal, how many plastic bags does the US use in one year? Answer: 100 billion

Green Tip - These simple actions can cut water consumption in half. Turn off the water when soaping your hands, and minimize the amount of soap. Your hands don’t necessarily get cleaner with more soap. And turn the water off while brushing your teeth – save water and money!

How many barrels of oil does it take to produce those bags? 12 million
